grand junction wrap up
Grand Junction.
A town full of mesa landscapes, mountain lovers and desert art. We arrived after two nights of camping and were happy to have running water, hot showers and warm beds. It’s the simple things, right?
Monday and Tuesday we set up our airstream studio at the Mesa Mall and had a fun and eclectic variety come out to record. We had our first paleontologist of this year’s tour record her aha moment, and we also heard from the inventor of a fairly successful bathroom accessory. It was just great to meet so many Grand Junctionites and experience the local flavor. And while I’m talking about local flavor, one of the top restaurant experiences we had was at a local joint called the Kannah Creek Brewing Company. Our food and beverages were fantastic, complimented by top-notch service and a rocking outdoor atmosphere. A must-visit for Grand Junction!
The weather was cool (a mere 87 degrees), and although the locals were complaining about the humidity, we were quite content. If there were any records to be broken they certainly weren’t about the weather! Thanks to all the great Coloradans who came out to share aha moments with us. Here are a few of the stories we heard:
Meet Charly:
I have always loved roller derby but never thought to get involved because I was never good at sports. One day I was sitting at home and decided to go for it and start my own team here in Grand Junction. The amount of people interested in playing and in supporting our team has been amazing.
Meet Lee:
My aha moment came when I was in culinary school. I brought a cheesecake that I had made to share with my class and my instructor asked me where he could buy one. I replied “Give me ninety days”. Ninety days later I opened up a shop and started selling my decadent cheesecakes. {Note: We’d like to extend a huge thanks to Lee for leaving us with six of his little cheesecake jars! They are too cute and we were loving the Apricot Riesling and Habanero Key Lime flavors!]
Meet Emma Lou:
I have been reading to children for ten years now at a local doctors office while they wait to be seen. Not long ago a young man came up to me and told me he remembered when I read to him as a boy. That moment really touched me and reaffirmed what I do.
What’s next, you may wonder? We have a few days off while we make the incredible hike to Eugene… 1,200 miles in 5 days! Luckily we still have our camping gear and are looking forward to enjoying the Western scenery as we can, starting with Moab, Utah. Stay tuned to see where we stop after that!
