it’s a wrap for richmond!
Sprinkled with vintage shops and townies galore, we were very happy to be planted in front of the historic Byrd Theater for a few days. Since the twenties the Byrd has been a landmark for the city, providing an unofficial community center as people come and go to the theater exchanging gossip and local news.
The Byrd is just the beginning. Richmond, we found, has a hidden charm to it. You can practically feel the history oozing out from the cracks in the cobblestone sidewalks. Not too far away from the site of Patrick Henry’s legendary “Give me liberty, or give me death,” speech we dined and shopped and wandered around on foot. I’m thinking the historic nature of Richmond correlates to the surplus of vintage shopping venues, which Kait and I were thrilled to find.
Not only did we love our surroundings, but we also found the people of Richmond to be inventive, funny and inspiring. One in particular was a woman from Maryland who drove four hours one-way just to come see us. She had seen the commercials on television, looked up the tour on the web and drove out to share her aha moment. Another Airstream lover, she was beyond excited to see our custom-fitted ’stream turned film studio. On behalf of the four of us, I’d like to shout out a giant THANK YOU to Peggy from Maryland! We were so honored she went to those lengths to see us! In addition, here are a few more Richmond folks who made us smile:
Meet Ronald:
I was working at a company that I had been with for nearly 20 years. One day I found out that they were going to do mass layoffs and that my name was on the list. It occurred to me that it is not the company’s job to provide for me, its my own. So I left the company and started up a BBQ joint with the help of my sons.
Meet Grant:
My aha moment came when I realized how many children do not have access to books or are illiterate. I attended a conference where I learned that private prison systems use third grade reading levels to estimate prison growth. My passion is to promote literacy and get kids involved in reading.
We have a few days off now and are going to spend them soaking up some rays and waves on the eastern shore board. And then onto Providence!
